BookAid Indonesia - Helping English Language students in Indonesia

About BookAid Indonesia

BookAid Indonesia is forming strong relationships with schools, teachers and students across the Indonesian island of Flores and surrounding islands.

Students studying English as a second language are poorly resourced in this remote area. BookAid Indonesia is helping to assist with the provision of library books and educational texts. BookAid Indonesia is also connecting Australian Bahasa Schools with Floresian Schools to foster 'two-way' language and cultural development.

What is BookAid Indonesia?

BookAid Indonesia is a privately operated charitable organisation based in Melbourne, Australia. Our objective is to gather books that are suitable as learning texts for English language students in Eastern Indonesia, particularly Flores, Timor and Timor-Lesté. Novels, non-fiction reference, educational text books and encyclopaedic texts are collected to our Melbourne sorting centre, checked for suitability as reading/reference material for Indonesian English students, packed and shipped to our base at Mbay on the north coast of Flores, Indonesia.

Why was BookAid Indonesia created?

BookAid Indonesia was established to fill an education resources shortfall in East Nusa Tenggara (Eastern Indonesia) and Timor-Lesté. Students electing to study English as a second language do not have available strong learning texts or library material that enables them to develop familiarity and knowledge of English. A sound foundation in English is required to work or study abroad.

BookAid Indonesia is focused on TWO major objectives.

  1. Create foundation libraries in participating schools of suitable English texts that greatly enhance student and teacher resources, and
  2. Create opportunities for Indonesian 'Bahasa' speaking students and Australian 'English' speaking students to develop on-line discussion groups to share experiences of culture, language and life-style

Who benefits from BookAid Indonesia?

The obvious beneficiaries are the Indonesian students in Flores and Timor who are gaining an injection of library resources beyond what they can presently afford, as well as the opportunity to develop 'one to one' relationships with native English speaking students via Skype or online communication platforms.

Teachers in Indonesia will also greatly benefit from the development of English text libraries as an 'aide to teach' their students.

Australian students of Bahasa Indonesia will enjoy the opportunity to develop their language skills using online communication with Indonesian students, as well as sharing experiences of culture, language and life-style.
